Affordable Polo Market Shops: Meghalaya Govt Issues New Tender
Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on July 7 said the state government will issue a fourth Expression of Interest (EOI) — a public call seeking potential lessees — for commercial spaces at the Polo Market complex, this time with reduced rental rates after three earlier attempts failed to attract any bidders.
Speaking to reporters, Dhar said high lease rates had discouraged prospective tenants from coming forward. “We have floated the EOI three times, but no one has responded. The rates were too high. We have decided to go again for an EOI, but this time we will reduce the rates,” he said.
The deputy chief minister said the administration is keen to make the Municipal Polo commercial complex operational as soon as possible and is revising its leasing strategy to draw a broader mix of businesses. Under the revised approach, the government will offer more flexible leasing options to suit different operators.
Entrepreneurs will be able to bid for the entire building or for smaller portions of the complex, a move intended to open opportunities for both larger firms and small local businesses. “We want the building to become operational immediately. We will provide opportunities for those who want to lease the whole space as well as those interested in smaller portions. We also want to give small entrepreneurs a chance,” Dhar said.
Dhar said the fresh EOI is likely to be floated within a week of July 7 or shortly thereafter, signalling a rapid push to relaunch the leasing process. He also noted that the Business‑cum‑Tourism Centre within the Polo Market complex is nearing completion and that the government will soon invite tenders to operate that facility, paving the way for it to become functional.
If successful, the revised EOI and flexible leasing model aim to activate the long-lying commercial complex, broaden business participation, and create openings for small entrepreneurs to operate in the Polo Market precinct.
