Nagaland Activist Thanks PM Modi as Parents Take First Delhi Flight
Nagaland-based social activist Temsutula Imsong thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi after improved road, air and transport links allowed her parents to travel from their village in Ungma to her home in Delhi for the first time — a trip she said fulfilled a decades-long dream. In a four-part post on X, Imsong described how the family travelled by road to Jorhat and then took an IndiGo flight under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme, completing the journey from home to Delhi in a single day.
Imsong is best known for leading a large grassroots cleanup at the ghats of the Ganges in Varanasi. In 2013 she co-founded the Sakaar Sewa Samiti and spearheaded Mission Prabhughat, an initiative that transformed heavily polluted riverbanks into cleaner public spaces.
Writing on X, she said the improved road network made the drive from Ungma to Jorhat smooth and comfortable, allowing the family to leave in the morning and reach Delhi by evening. She noted that her parents boarded an aircraft for the first time and that watching their reactions — wonder, curiosity and gratitude — was the most memorable part of the trip.
Imsong also described her mother’s excitement exploring Delhi, marveling at the city’s transport system, food, buildings and pace of life. She said the visit let her witness long-held dreams come alive, adding that she spent much of the flight watching her parents’ expressions rather than looking out the window.
Stressing that her post was not meant to compare village and city life, Imsong wrote that Ungma “will always remain home.” She highlighted that people living in the hills have historically faced challenges due to limited connectivity and difficult access to essential services.
Imsong thanked the prime minister and wrote that “development should be measured not only through roads, airports and bridges but also by the peace of mind it brings to families.” She added that her parents returned home reassured after seeing their daughter was safe and “only a few hours away.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded on X, saying Imsong had spoken for many from the Northeast. “Very well said sister. You have spoken for so many of us North Easterners. Many still under appreciate how Adarniya @narendramodi ji has revolutionised connectivity in our region. Travelling from Ungma to Delhi through Jorhat in a day was impossible even a few years ago,” he wrote.
