Shocking Bust: 400 Sacks of Urea Seized in Cachar, Probe Launched
Assam Police seized 400 sacks of subsidised urea from a truck near the Assam–Mizoram border in Cachar district on Friday evening, foiling what officers say was an alleged attempt to smuggle the fertiliser into Mizoram and arresting the driver. The consignment was discovered during a targeted operation based on specific intelligence.
A team from the Lailapur police patrol outpost intercepted the vehicle in a special operation supervised by senior Cachar police officers. During a search, officers found the urea concealed beneath food items. Each sack was recorded at 45.130 kg, a total of about 18,052 kg (approximately 18.05 tonnes) of fertiliser.
The driver was identified as 26-year-old Sahirul Islam Laskar, a resident of Khulichhara village under Dholai in Cachar district, and was taken into custody. Police also seized the truck and what they described as allegedly forged documents believed to have been used to facilitate the illegal transportation.
The accused, the vehicle and the seized materials were handed over to Dholai police station for legal action. Investigations are under way to identify others involved in the alleged interstate smuggling network and to trace the intended recipients in Mizoram.
Authorities said the seizure removes a large quantity of subsidised fertiliser from an illicit supply chain, protecting stocks meant for genuine farmers. Further enquiries and forensic checks of the documents are expected as police pursue leads across districts.
