Sony to Permanently End PlayStation Disc Production in 2028
Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that it will stop producing physical disc versions of new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028. Under the plan, any game released on PlayStation platforms after that date will be distributed only through the PlayStation Store or as PlayStation Store codes sold by retailers. The change applies to new releases only; titles already available or launched before January 2028 will not be affected.
Sony said the move reflects consumer preferences and broader shifts in the entertainment industry, asserting that most of its community now prefers to buy games digitally. The company positioned the decision as a response to demand for convenience and the economics of digital distribution.
Physical discs have long been a defining feature of console gaming, offering a tangible product that can be shared, resold or played offline without relying on an online store. Those advantages have also allowed a secondary market and retailer-driven discounts that can reduce costs for consumers. Publishers and platform owners have frequently cited those same factors-resale, sharing and discounting-as reasons to favor digital-only releases.
Publishers have already been eroding the value of discs in several ways, the announcement noted: by skipping physical releases where feasible or shipping discs that require large online downloads to complete the game. Advocates for preserving physical media argue this trend threatens long-term access and ownership, since purchased digital content can be removed or rendered inaccessible if a storefront closes.
The timing of Sony’s announcement follows a separate PlayStation update the company posted on July 1, 2026: the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita will stop accepting new purchases this year, though downloads for previous purchases will remain available “for the foreseeable future,” in Sony’s words. That example highlights a core concern about digital storefronts — that access to purchased content can be time-limited and ultimately dependent on a platform operator’s business decisions.
Industry observers say Sony’s move accelerates an existing trend toward digital-only distribution begun by some publishers (Rockstar recently confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI will be digital-only). The change is likely to reduce used-game availability and could curb deep retail discounts, shifting more of the long-term control of game access and pricing to platform holders and publishers. The decision raises enduring questions about ownership, preservation and consumer choice as the games industry moves further into a digital-first model.
