Tripura Sees Rs 83 Crore Cyber Fraud in 4 Years — DGP Alerts

Agartala: Tripura has recorded cyber frauds totaling about Rs 83 crore over the last four years, Director General of Police Anurag said on Tuesday, underscoring a rising cyber threat as the state moves to strengthen its cybersecurity framework. He told a state-level workshop on “Strengthening Cyber Security Frameworks for State Data” that around Rs 15.43 crore of the defrauded amount was frozen after timely reporting by victims, and about Rs 1.23 crore has been refunded so far.

The workshop, held under the third phase of the National Consultative Process on Expanding Cyber Security Framework for State Data, brought together officials from government departments, law enforcement and technology experts to assess risks and map responses. The DGP warned that cybercrime has evolved considerably: investigations increasingly involve ransomware, phishing, financial fraud, data theft and compromised digital systems rather than conventional crime scenes.

Tripura now has a dedicated Cyber Crime Police Station with statewide jurisdiction and has recently set up a State Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (S4C), which works alongside the State Computer Security Incident Response Team (State CSIRT) to tackle threats. Officials stressed closer coordination between technical teams and law enforcement and said timely reporting is critical to preserve digital evidence and enable successful investigation and prosecution.

Chief Secretary Jitendra Kumar Sinha emphasised that the rapid expansion of digital governance has led to large-scale storage and processing of sensitive government and citizen data, making cybersecurity an administrative as well as a technical priority. He called for robust security measures, continuous monitoring and development of skilled manpower to protect critical digital assets.

Director of the Information Technology Department Jeya Ragul Geshan B. said the state’s digital infrastructure is under continuous monitoring under the Tripura Cyber Security Policy and that the Tripura Cyber Security Policy 2025 has been implemented with significant upgrades to the State Data Centre and network infrastructure. He urged coordinated risk assessment, modernisation of legacy systems, secure-by-design architecture, zero-trust principles and stronger data protection.

Officials and experts reviewed the state’s preparedness, identified gaps and drafted recommendations to be forwarded to the concerned national authority for inclusion in the proposed national cybersecurity framework.
