Doomdooma: The recent unearthing of ancient stone artefacts in the remote Karbi Anglong villages of Kuruna Killing and Sarthe Rongphar has prompted the district administration to launch steps for scientific study, documentation and preservation of the finds. Karbi Anglong Deputy Commissioner Aranyak Saikia visited the two Phuloni Revenue Circle villages on Monday to inspect the relics and meet villagers who discovered them.
Saikia, after examining the objects, told residents the artefacts could offer valuable clues about the district’s early settlement patterns, cultural evolution and historical development, and stressed the need for expert analysis. Officials said the recovered items include stone plates and other stone remains that may illuminate previously undocumented phases of human habitation in the area.
Recognising the potential historical value of the finds, the administration has proposed systematic research, scientific documentation and long-term conservation measures for the relics. Kuruna Killing and Sarthe Rongphar are traditional Karbi villages: Sarthe Rongphar is recorded as a small settlement largely inhabited by indigenous communities, while Kuruna Killing forms part of a network of historic villages across the foothills and plains of eastern Karbi Anglong.
Nestled among forested terrain and rolling hills, these villages have seen little archaeological attention until now. The discoveries have intensified calls from experts and local observers for a comprehensive archaeological survey of Karbi Anglong, a district already known for its megalithic traditions, monolithic structures and rich oral history.
Observers warn that much of Karbi Anglong’s archaeological wealth remains undocumented and say extensive exploration and research are required to better understand the region’s historical legacy. The administration’s next steps aim to bring scientific scrutiny to the relics and to preserve them for further study.
