Major Bust: Assam Rifles, DRI Seize Rs 1.31 Cr Poppy Seeds in Cachar
Assam Rifles, working jointly with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized a large consignment of poppy seeds valued at about ₹1.31 crore in Cachar district, officials said on Sunday, June 21. The operation was launched on the basis of specific intelligence about alleged contraband trafficking in the area.
According to officials, a joint team intercepted a vehicle on the Silchar Bypass Road late on the evening of June 20 and recovered 8,764 kilograms of poppy seeds. Authorities estimated the consignment’s value at approximately ₹1.31 crore.
Two residents of Silchar were arrested in connection with the seizure. Investigators also confiscated the Tata truck used to transport the consignment and two mobile handsets recovered from those detained.
The recovered goods, the arrested individuals and the seized materials have been handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence for further investigation and necessary legal proceedings. The DRI will lead any subsequent casework and prosecution related to the alleged trafficking.
Assam Rifles and the DRI have carried out sustained anti-contraband operations across the Northeast to disrupt trafficking networks, officials said. They described the latest seizure as a significant development in ongoing enforcement efforts to curb illegal trafficking in the region.
