Zubeen Garg Mural Uproar: Artist to Repaint at Ganeshguri; GMC Denies
Artist Marshall Baruah has announced he will repaint singer Zubeen Garg’s mural at Ganeshguri on Thursday at 4 PM, setting the stage for a fresh confrontation after the portrait was seen being painted over earlier this week. Baruah criticised the removal, calling it upsetting and asking how anyone could erase the image of one of Assam’s most celebrated cultural figures, and he has urged supporters to gather at the site in a show of solidarity.
The mural’s erasure on Wednesday sparked widespread backlash on social media, with fans, admirers and well-wishers voicing disappointment and outrage across the state. The incident quickly gained traction online and has continued to generate debate and emotional responses among the public.
With supporters expected to assemble at Ganeshguri when Baruah begins work, attention has turned to the site as the artist seeks to recreate the portrait and measure public sentiment surrounding the controversy. Organisers and onlookers will be watching to see how large a turnout the call for support attracts.
Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Garg Saikia, responded to the mural’s removal in an emotional Facebook post, questioning whether the painting had truly made the city “ugly” or was unnecessary, and insisting that erasing the image from a wall could not remove the affection people hold for the singer. “He is immortal. He is rooted in our hearts, minds, emotions, and conscience. And he will remain there forever,” Saikia wrote.
Guwahati Municipal Corporation Mayor Mrigen Sarania has denied any role by the civic body in removing the artwork. Speaking to the media, Sarania said the GMC’s involvement was limited to cleaning the area and removing garbage, and he said the corporation has no information on who was responsible for taking down the mural.
