Major Assam Fisheries Raid Seizes 7 Quintals of Banned Thai Catfish
On June 18 the Assam Fisheries Department seized and destroyed nearly seven quintals (about 700 kg) of banned Thai catfish during a raid at Poyranga in Boko in Kamrup district. The operation, led by Fisheries Officer Mondip Saikia of the Chhaygaon Development Block, formed part of a wider drive against illegal fish farming and the cultivation and sale of the prohibited species. Officials said the confiscated stock was destroyed by burying it in pits treated with salt.
Department authorities warned that the cultivation of Thai catfish poses a serious threat to indigenous fish and the ecological balance of local water bodies. They said the invasive species disrupts breeding cycles and can outcompete native varieties such as Borali, Puthi and Khalihna, putting local biodiversity at risk.
The raid is part of a renewed enforcement push following a nationwide ban on Thai catfish imposed by the National Green Tribunal in 2000 on environmental and health grounds. Despite the prohibition, the Fisheries Department said illegal cultivation and trade of the species have persisted in several areas, prompting continued surveillance and action.
Officials also raised concerns about potential health risks from consuming Thai catfish produced under unhygienic conditions. The department has warned that legal action will be taken against individuals found involved in illegal farming and sale of the species across the district.
The Fisheries Department said similar enforcement operations will be carried out across Assam to protect aquatic biodiversity and ensure compliance with the ban, signaling sustained efforts to curb illegal fish farming and safeguard native fish stocks and public health.
