60 Families Evicted from Brahmaputra Riverbank in Dibrugarh – Outcry
The Dibrugarh district administration on Monday carried out a large eviction drive along the Brahmaputra riverbank in the Maijan area, clearing about 60 families who officials say had been illegally living there for more than a decade. The operation recovered nearly nine bighas of encroached land where several households had built permanent RCC (reinforced cement concrete) structures, authorities said.
Evicted residents accused land brokers of running an organised racket that sold government land. “Seven years ago, we paid Rs 1.5 lakh to a broker who assured us the land was legal. Now we’ve lost both our money and our home,” an evicted woman told reporters. Other residents said payments to brokers ranged from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3 lakh.
The clearance followed an order from the Dibrugarh district and sessions court and after due notices were served to occupants. A large police contingent was deployed as a precaution, but officials said the operation proceeded peacefully. Families were seen removing belongings before excavators demolished the encroachments.
“We had made adequate security arrangements keeping in mind the scale of the eviction, but the residents cooperated fully with the administration. There was no untoward incident during the entire operation,” said Samujjwal Borah, circle officer of the Dibrugarh East revenue circle, who led the drive.
Officials said the reclaimed land will be brought under administrative control to prevent further encroachment. They warned that what began as a small settlement had grown into a colony over the past decade and posed threats to the riverbank ecosystem and future flood management. The eviction forms part of the administration’s wider effort to protect riverbank areas from unauthorised occupation and to safeguard them for flood‑control and environmental purposes.
