Mamata Banerjee’s Party Firmly Denies Congress–TMC Merger Rumors
Trinamool Congress (TMC) has flatly denied reports that it is planning a merger with the Indian National Congress, calling such speculation “a baseless rumour,” senior party sources said after meetings in New Delhi. The conjecture intensified following exchanges between TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and Congress veteran Sonia Gandhi, but TMC leaders stressed that no talks about absorption or formal unification between the two parties have taken place.
The denials came amid a period of internal turmoil within TMC, including leadership resignations and allegations of attacks on party workers after the recent elections. In the same political context, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee held talks with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, while Mamata Banerjee met Sonia Gandhi at the latter’s New Delhi residence. Sources described the discussions as cordial and focused on broader opposition cooperation rather than any structural merger.
According to participants, Mamata used the closed-door meeting — reported to be her first private conversation with Sonia since the election — to emphasise the importance of opposition unity and urged alliance leaders to refrain from publicly criticising one another. She argued that the opposition should coordinate to address key policy issues and protect party workers, signalling a tactical move toward working together on shared priorities.
Observers note this marks a shift from Mamata Banerjee’s earlier posture, when she explored building a separate platform independent of the Congress. Party insiders say the current rhetoric reflects a pragmatic decision by both parties to collaborate closely while stopping short of formal consolidation. Both TMC and Congress have, therefore, denied claims of any merger and portrayed reports suggesting otherwise as misinformation.
For now, party leaders appear to prioritise tactical alignment and mutual cooperation within the opposition without altering their distinct organizational identities. TMC’s official stance remains that reports of a merger are unfounded, and the discussions in New Delhi should be read as dialogue on coordination rather than steps toward unification.
