Guwahati Birubari Eviction: Over 30 Homes Affected, Families Displaced
An eviction drive on Friday, June 5, at Surabala Bordoloi Nagar and a neighbouring road near R.K. Mission Road in Guwahati’s Birubari area left more than 30 houses affected, residents said, prompting protests and questions about notice and eligibility for rehabilitation. Authorities say the operation was carried out on government land tied to a long‑pending case and that occupants had been issued notices earlier.
Residents allege they were not given adequate prior notice. Several people said officials visited the neighbourhood only a day before the demolition and then returned the next day to carry out the eviction.
A 22‑year‑old lifelong resident told GPlus that families in the area regularly paid utility bills and had been assigned house numbers by relevant departments. “We have lived here for years and paid our bills,” he said, adding that he could not understand why some homes were demolished while neighbouring houses were spared.
Another resident, a mother whose son is due to sit exams from June 10, described the situation as distressing. She said the family has been left without a place to stay and is worried about how her son will prepare under the current uncertainty.
Guwahati Revenue Circle Officer Manoj Dutta told GPlus the eviction stems from a long‑pending legal matter and that the land is government property. He said notices had been issued to occupants on several occasions before the drive. Dutta added that the affected structures do not meet the eligibility criteria under the Assam Land Policy and that some households were not demolished because they possess legal documents; those cases are being considered separately. He also said eligible affected families would receive a rehabilitation grant of ₹5 lakh from the government.
