10,000 Saplings Planted in Assam: Heartfelt Tribute to Zubeen Garg
On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Manas Maozigendri Ecotourism Society organised a mega plantation drive at Chepnapara, planting 10,000 indigenous saplings in memory of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. Held under the SGP initiative, the programme drew more than 300 community members who joined together to create a living tribute to the artiste.
The drive received institutional backing from the Assam Police, the Sashastra Seema Bal, the Assam Forest Department and local organisations including the All Bodoland Riders Association, Chepnapara FRC, NCC, CKAC and the All Bodo Students’ Union. Volunteers and officials worked across the site to ensure saplings were planted with attention to long-term survival.
Organisers described the event as “more than just a plantation drive,” framing it as a concrete commitment to environmental conservation and a lasting homage to Zubeen Garg’s influence. They said each tree planted represents hope, ecological restoration and gratitude for an artiste whose music resonated across generations in Assam.
Beyond the symbolic gesture, organisers and participants underscored the ecological purpose: the indigenous species were selected to support local biodiversity, stabilise soil and strengthen the surrounding forest ecosystem as the plants mature. Community stewardship was highlighted as essential to the saplings’ future growth.
As the newly planted trees take root, organisers expect them to become enduring symbols of Zubeen Garg’s connection to the region’s people, culture and natural heritage, creating a living memorial in Chepnapara that future generations can visit and protect.
