Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi Mourns Mother Priyada Gogoi’s Passing at 96
Priyada Gogoi, the 96-year-old mother of Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, died in Guwahati on Wednesday morning, June 3, 2026, after a prolonged illness. Family sources said she passed away at around 6:20 am following treatment for age-related ailments.
The family confirmed that Priyada Gogoi had been receiving medical care for an extended period. Her death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, supporters and well-wishers across Assam.
Akhil Gogoi was at his mother’s side during her final moments. The veteran legislator, known for his vocal opposition to the state government and his activism on public issues, described the loss as a deeply personal tragedy.
Her mortal remains are being taken to Selenghat, near Mariani in Jorhat district, where last rites will be performed in the presence of family members, relatives and supporters.
Priyada Gogoi played a notable role in her son’s political journey, particularly during the 2021 Assam Assembly elections. At the time, Akhil Gogoi was lodged in jail in connection with anti-CAA protests and contested the Sivasagar seat as an Independent; she emerged as one of his most determined campaigners.
Despite her advanced age, she reportedly went door to door urging voters to support her son and publicly demanded his release from prison. Observers credited her campaigning with helping to galvanise the support that contributed to Akhil Gogoi’s landmark victory from Sivasagar.
Her passing has drawn tributes from leaders across party lines, who expressed grief and extended condolences to the bereaved family. The loss is being felt both within the Gogoi family and among those who saw Priyada Gogoi as a key figure in a pivotal chapter of Assam’s recent political history.
