West Bengal’s New Minister with Assam Link Backs Bold Closer Ties
Silchar, June 1 — Newly sworn-in West Bengal Minister of State Anandamoy Barman on Monday urged that Assam–Bengal relations, rooted in shared history, language, culture and people-to-people ties, be further strengthened in the days ahead. Speaking to The Assam Tribune, Barman said closer cooperation between the neighbouring states would benefit communities on both sides.
An alumnus of Assam University, Silchar, Barman took oath as a minister in the Suvendu Adhikari-led West Bengal government. He emphasised that long-standing social and linguistic connections bind Assam and Bengal: “Assam and Bengal have always shared a relationship, and that bond will remain. Many Bengali-speaking people live in Assam, while Rajbongshi and several other communities have close links with Assam and the Northeast. People, culture and history connect us,” he told the paper.
His remarks come against the backdrop of recent cordial political exchanges between the two state governments. Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma was present at West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s oath-taking, and Adhikari attended the swearing-in ceremony of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government in Guwahati on May 12. Barman described such gestures as important for improving mutual understanding and cooperation: “The relationship is already there. It should be strengthened further for the benefit of the people.”
Barman’s elevation has also been welcomed by his alma mater. He completed his Master’s in Education at Assam University in 2013. Dr Sreeparna Bhattacharjee, Associate Professor in the university’s Department of Education, said Barman’s rise brings pride to the department and expressed hope he would be “a pro-people leader guided by education, values and commitment to society.”
Responding to messages from his former teachers, Barman said he personally contacted several of them after his swearing-in to seek their blessings and thanked them for their support. “I feel very happy that my teachers and well-wishers are rejoicing in this moment. Their blessings mean a lot to me,” he said.
