About 2:35 a.m. on May 30, a bus struck vehicles that were slowing for a work zone on southbound Interstate 95 in Stafford County, near Quantico, Virginia, killing five people and injuring dozens, authorities said. Police reported that 44 people were taken to hospitals following the crash, including three in critical condition, and that the bus carried 34 passengers.
All five fatalities were occupants of vehicles hit by the bus. Four people — a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy — who were all from Greenfield, Massachusetts, were killed when their car caught fire. A fifth victim, an unidentified 25-year-old woman from Worcester, Massachusetts, was in an SUV struck by the bus.
State police identified the bus driver as Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York. Authorities did not immediately release a cause for the crash. State police provided the details to the Associated Press.
