At least two construction workers were killed and seven others seriously injured when a water tank collapsed at the under-construction Bilasipara Railway Station on May 26. The collapse occurred during ongoing infrastructure work on a large water tank at the station premises, authorities and eyewitnesses said.
Eye-witnesses reported that labourers were working at height when a bamboo support structure and makeshift scaffolding suddenly gave way. The heavy water tank fell from a considerable height and struck workers standing below, causing immediate casualties.
Two labourers — identified as Siddique Shaikh and Saiful Islam — were declared dead at the scene. Seven others were critically injured; those named among the injured are Bakkar Sheikh, Nazir Hussain, Abubakar Sheikh, Zahir Islam, Jabbar Sheikh, Enam Karim and Nawab Ali.
Railway staff, local residents and passing commuters rushed to the spot after the collapse and moved the injured to Bilasipara Model CHC Hospital for emergency treatment. Hospital sources said the injured were admitted with serious trauma and were undergoing treatment.
The incident sparked widespread outrage among residents, victims’ families and several local organisations, who alleged negligence by the contractor handling the project. Locals claimed that adequate safety measures — including protective gear, harnesses and secure structural supports — were not provided to workers conducting high-risk, high-altitude work.
A team from Bilasipara Police, accompanied by an Executive Magistrate, later reached the site to secure the area and launch an investigation. The bodies of the deceased were taken for post-mortem examination as part of the probe.
Community organisations have demanded a transparent inquiry, strict action against those responsible and immediate compensation for the families of the deceased and the injured. Authorities have said an official investigation is under way to determine the cause and assign responsibility.
