The Supreme Court on May 26, 2026, declined to urgently hear a public interest litigation seeking strict enforcement of laws that would impose a complete ban on cow slaughter ahead of Bakrid. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi refused the plea after it was mentioned for urgent listing, saying there was no immediate need to take the matter up.
“You remembered this a day before. No urgency. Thanks,” the bench told counsel while refusing to grant an immediate hearing. Advocate Barun Kumar Sinha, appearing for the petitioner, had urged urgent consideration and told the court that Bakrid would be observed “day after tomorrow” (May 28, 2026), requesting that the case be listed on Wednesday.
The petition was filed by Satish Kumar Aggarwal, former vice-president of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha. It seeks directions for effective enforcement of laws aimed at protecting cows and their progeny from slaughter and asks the court to direct authorities to ensure a complete ban is implemented in accordance with relevant statutes.
The plea also asks state governments to frame and notify guidelines for regulating slaughterhouses in line with existing laws. The bench, however, did not grant the urgent listing sought for May 27, 2026, and the matter will proceed according to the court’s regular cause list.
