Urgent Plea in Dimapur: Exempt Church Vehicles from Signage Ban
Reported by Bhadra Gogoi. Dimapur — The Christian Forum Dimapur (CFD) has urged the Nagaland government to exempt officially registered church vehicles from a state notification that restricts the display of religious or NGO signage on vehicles. In a letter to the Chief Minister and the transport commissioner, the forum said the May 9 order, which bars religious or NGO-based slogans, stickers and other unauthorised identifiers on private and public vehicles unless specifically permitted under the Motor Vehicles Act and Rules, could hinder vital church services and outreach work.
The CFD told officials that church vehicles in Nagaland serve far more than transport functions and often act as lifelines during emergencies, outreach missions and humanitarian efforts. As a Christian-majority state, it said, churches are deeply involved in education, healthcare, social welfare, peace missions and relief work, and their vehicles are important instruments of public service.
The forum highlighted routine uses of church vehicles, including pastoral visits, transporting the sick, carrying relief materials, conducting peace missions during conflicts and serving remote villages. It argued that clear signage helps congregants — especially children, elderly people and visitors — quickly identify vehicles designated for worship services, funerals and church gatherings.
“These signages are not political slogans, commercial advertisements, or unlawful displays; they serve a legitimate community purpose,” the CFD said, asking the government to carve out an exemption for officially registered church vehicles so they can continue functioning safely and effectively for community service.
