Historic: Gitika Talukdar, Only Indian, Assamese FIFA Photojournalist
FIFA has officially accredited Assam-based photojournalist Gitika Talukdar to cover the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking her third consecutive assignment at the men’s tournament and making her the only female photojournalist from India included in the national media contingent for the event. The 2026 World Cup, to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will expand to 48 teams and is expected to draw the largest media presence in the tournament’s history.
Talukdar, who has steadily built a reputation in international sports journalism, has represented Northeast India and the South Asian media fraternity on major global stages. Her previous assignments include the 2018 and 2022 men’s FIFA World Cups, the 2019 and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cups, the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and the Paris Olympics 2024.
FIFA’s repeated accreditation of Talukdar is being viewed as recognition of her professional excellence and sustained contribution to global football coverage. Speaking exclusively to India Today NE, she described the accreditation as a proud and emotional milestone in her career and expressed gratitude: “I am very happy receiving the official recognition and accreditation from FIFA,” she said.
Talukdar also thanked the All India Football Federation and the Asian Football Federation for their support. Her selection highlights growing visibility for women photojournalists from India and continued representation of the Northeast on major international sporting platforms.
