Hundreds of women from small tea-growing households across the Nilip, Bokajan and Rongmongve blocks of Karbi Anglong district gathered to observe International Tea Day, reaffirming their commitment to collective entrepreneurship and sustainable tea production. The Rural Women Entrepreneurs (RWEs), along with members of the equifarmtea team, marked the occasion at Men Teron by showcasing their work processing Premium Karbi Artisanal Green Tea from leaves plucked on family-owned plots.
Organized as a women-led initiative, the event highlighted how smallholder families are moving beyond leaf cultivation to add value locally through artisanal processing. RWEs said their approach emphasizes traditional plucking methods, careful processing and eco-friendly practices aimed at producing a specialty green tea that reflects Karbi Anglong’s terroir.
Participants described the initiative as both an economic and social effort: it seeks to increase household incomes by creating marketable, higher-value tea products while strengthening community cooperation through collective entrepreneurship. The presence of equifarmtea team members underlined a growing partnership between grassroots producers and supportive organisations focused on sustainable agriculture and market access.
The celebration served as a platform to raise awareness about the role of women in the region’s small-scale tea sector and to promote practices that can sustain production without degrading local ecosystems. By processing and branding Premium Karbi Artisanal Green Tea locally, the RWEs aim to capture a larger share of profits and build a resilient model for rural livelihoods in Karbi Anglong.
