Shock as Injured Lamine Yamal to Miss Spain’s World Cup Opener
Forward Lamine Yamal is not expected to feature in Spain’s World Cup opener on June 15 against Cape Verde in Atlanta after suffering a left hamstring tear, The Athletic reported. The injury forces Barcelona’s teenage winger to miss the remainder of his club season and puts a major question mark over his availability for Spain at the tournament.
The same report added that Yamal’s Barcelona teammate Fermin López has been effectively ruled out of Spain’s World Cup campaign after suffering a right-foot fracture that will require surgery. The midfielder was injured during the first half of Sunday’s win against Real Betis.
Yamal sustained the left hamstring tear on April 22 while playing for Barcelona; the injury came when he converted a penalty against Celta Vigo and subsequently was sidelined for the rest of the club season. The club and national team will monitor his recovery, but current assessments make his participation in the June 15 opener unlikely.
Spain head coach and squad selectors now face the prospect of adjusting plans without Yamal’s pace and creativity on the wing and without López’s midfield options, with the team set to begin its World Cup campaign in Atlanta on June 15. The Athletic and other agencies reported the developments.
