A 650-metre viaduct at Namli in Gangtok district was opened for commercial operation on May 19, officials said in a statement issued on May 20, following directions from the Chief Secretary. The new structure links National Highway-10 with Airport Road (NH‑717A) and is being presented as a key move to improve regional connectivity and traffic flow.
Constructed at an average height of 25 metres above ground, the viaduct runs between the National Science Museum and the State Science Centre, marking a notable addition to local infrastructure. Officials described the alignment as strategic for easing movement through this built-up corridor.
Authorities said the viaduct will serve as an important diversion route for Ranipool town, where traffic congestion has been a persistent problem. By offering an alternate path around busy surface roads, the new structure is expected to reduce bottlenecks and shorten travel times for local commuters.
The project is also projected to cut the travel distance between Pakyong and Siliguri by nearly 6.5 kilometres, facilitating smoother vehicular movement and quicker journeys for people travelling along the route. Officials highlighted the expected benefits for daily commuters and transport operators who use this corridor frequently.
Government sources said the operationalisation of the viaduct will strengthen road infrastructure across the state and enhance connectivity along the strategic corridor linking eastern Sikkim with neighbouring regions. They added that the development aims to improve transportation efficiency and provide faster, more reliable travel for residents and travellers alike.
