PM Modi Pledges Stronger India–Sweden Friendship — What’s Next?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Gothenburg, Sweden on May 17, 2026, and thanked Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson for personally receiving him at the airport, saying he looked forward to deepening ties between the two nations during the visit.
Modi came to Sweden at Kristersson’s invitation after concluding a visit to the Netherlands, where he held talks with Dutch counterpart Rob Jetten, met the royal family and engaged with the Indian community.
In a post on X, Modi wrote: “I am grateful for Prime Minister Kristersson’s kind gesture of receiving me at Gothenburg Airport. Looking forward to strengthening the friendship between India and Sweden during this important visit.”
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, also posting on X, welcomed Modi’s arrival and called Sweden an “important partner” for India. Jaiswal noted the visit is expected to give “fresh momentum to the India–Sweden relationship” and highlighted cooperation areas including technology, sustainability, innovation and research and development.
Swedish Gripen fighter jets escorted Modi’s aircraft as it entered Swedish airspace, underscoring the ceremonial reception. According to the MEA, Modi and Kristersson will review the full range of bilateral ties and seek new avenues for cooperation, particularly to boost trade and investment.
The MEA cited bilateral trade of $7.75 billion in 2025 and Swedish foreign direct investment into India of $2.825 billion for the period 2000–2025. During the visit, Modi and Kristersson are scheduled to address the European Round Table for Industry alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Modi previously visited Sweden in 2018 to attend the first-ever India–Nordic Summit.
