A pregnant woman was forced to give birth in the courtyard of a government hospital in Faridabad in the early hours of Saturday after the facility’s main gate was found locked and no medical staff responded, hospital authorities said. The incident at the 30‑bed First Referral Unit in Sector‑3 left the health department alarmed and prompted the suspension of two employees for alleged negligence.
According to the patient’s family, 1:40 AM marked the arrival of Balesh, a resident of Badoli village, after labour pains began. On reaching the hospital, relatives found the main gate closed and pounded on the door and shouted for help for some time before discovering a rear gate that was unlocked.
Family members say they entered through that back gate but found no doctors, nurses or other staff to assist. Balesh’s condition deteriorated rapidly and, with no timely medical help available, relatives delivered the baby in the hospital courtyard. The entire delivery was carried out under the light of a mobile‑phone torch, one relative later told reporters.
A woman who had accompanied Balesh — described by the family as having some prior experience assisting births — helped deliver the child. Both mother and newborn were admitted to the same hospital afterwards for care, the family said.
District deputy civil surgeon Dr. Rachna said the delivery took place within minutes of the woman’s arrival. She noted that while the OPD gate was closed at night, another gate was kept open for emergencies. After the matter gained attention, the Haryana health department ordered a formal inquiry under directions from the health minister and the director general of health services.
Birendra Yadav, director of the Haryana National Health Mission, said the probe revealed “serious negligence” by staff on night duty. He added that the on‑duty employee and a staff nurse were not present in the hospital when the family sought help and could not be found despite the relatives’ attempts. Following the investigation, two employees were suspended. Hospital administration has been strictly instructed to keep the main entrance open at night to ensure no emergency patient is denied timely access.
