A Russian family travelled to Gaya in Bihar to perform traditional pind-daan rites on the banks of the sacred Falgu River for a soldier from their family who died in the long-running Russia–Ukraine war. The family completed the ancestral rituals according to Hindu customs, drawing attention for coming from far away to pray for the departed soul’s peace.
Members of the family, including Lalita Radha Rani Fech and her husband, Sundara Fech, joined relatives at the riverbank and took part in the ceremonies. They said the death of Lalita’s brother in the conflict left the family devastated, and they came to Gaya because they believe these rites will help secure eternal peace for the deceased.
Under the supervision of local priest Kumar Gaurav, the family observed the prescribed rituals and offerings. Pind-daan is a Hindu funerary rite performed for ancestors; devotees believe that performing these rites at sacred sites such as Gaya and the Falgu River aids the soul’s journey and grants peace to the departed.
Sundara told reporters the family had long known Gaya’s religious importance and decided to perform the ceremonies for both their brother and father, hoping the rituals would bring renewed peace, unity and comfort to the household.
Gaya draws thousands of devotees each year from across India and overseas to perform similar ancestral rites, and officials and priests say the number of foreign pilgrims to the city has noticeably increased in recent years. The Fech family’s visit highlights how religious traditions in Gaya continue to attract people from distant countries seeking spiritual solace amid personal loss.
