Abu Dhabi, May 15 — India stands ready to offer “all possible support” to restore peace in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday after high-level talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as the two countries signed several pacts to deepen cooperation in energy, defence, shipping and advanced technology.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the talks covered energy security, trade and investment, defence cooperation, the blue economy, fintech, technology and people-to-people ties. Both leaders exchanged views on regional and global developments, with particular focus on the evolving situation in West Asia.
A major outcome was an energy cooperation agreement between Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL) and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). The pact aims to strengthen India’s energy security, including collaboration on LNG and LPG storage. A separate deal secures long-term LPG supply arrangements to stabilise India’s cooking gas chain amid global market volatility.
The two sides also signed a framework for a strategic defence partnership to boost defence industrial cooperation, joint innovation and technology sharing, and to strengthen regional security. Additional agreements in shipping and advanced technology signal an expansion of the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the UAE.
In his remarks, Modi condemned recent attacks on the UAE: “We condemned the attacks on the UAE. The way UAE has been targeted is not acceptable. But the way UAE has handled the current situation with restraint is praiseworthy,” he said. Modi thanked the UAE leadership for a “gracious gesture” after being received at the airport by Sheikh Mohamed in a rare display that included a guard of honour and an aerial escort by UAE military jets. He said he looks forward to deepening cooperation across energy, investment and supply chains.
With instability in West Asia putting pressure on crude oil routes — notably the Strait of Hormuz — energy security remained central to the talks. The MEA said the meeting reflected growing alignment on strategic and economic priorities amid a rapidly shifting geopolitical environment.
The visit marks the start of Modi’s five‑nation tour; he will proceed to the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy for talks on trade, technology, green transition and investment.
