IED Defused Near Indo-Myanmar Border; Grenades Seized in Imphal
Security forces in Manipur on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, defused an improvised explosive device (IED) near the Indo‑Myanmar border in Kamjong district, and police also reported the recovery of two hand grenades and fresh incidents of violence in other parts of the state, officials said.
The IED was found near Border Pillar No. 90, about 50 km west of Kasom Khullen Police Station, amid continuing tension in the hill districts, police said. Fresh incidents of violence were additionally reported from Wanglee, Namlee and Choro villages, according to officials.
Personnel of the 40 Assam Rifles stationed at K Ashang Khullen detected the suspected device on Monday at around 9:30 am and informed Kasom Khullen Police Station. Police said the explosive was suspected to have been planted by the Kuki National Army‑Burma (KNA‑B). A Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) team from Imphal later reached the spot and safely defused the IED at about 2:55 pm.
In a separate case in Imphal East district, police recovered two 36 HE hand grenades from the residence of Advance Hospital and Research Institute director Guruaribam Bhavananda Sharma at Brahmapur Guruaribam Leikai under Porompat Police Station. A family member reportedly noticed a black plastic bag near the gate on Tuesday morning and alerted authorities after finding it suspicious.
During inspection, police said they found the two grenades along with a note allegedly issued by the banned group KCP‑PWG that described the explosives as a “last warning” to the hospital director. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) removed the devices safely at around 9:10 am. A case has been registered at Porompat Police Station and further investigation is underway, police added.
Authorities said the incidents are being probed as part of broader security concerns in the state’s hill areas. Police have not released additional details about suspects or casualties and urged the public to report any suspicious objects or activity to local stations.
