হিমন্ত বিশ্ব শৰ্মাইৰ দ্বিতীয় শপত: অসমৰ মুখ্যমন্ত্ৰীৰ নতুন অধ্যায়
Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in on Tuesday for a second consecutive term as chief minister of Assam, following a decisive mandate for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state elections. The oath-taking at the Khanapara Veterinary College grounds in Guwahati capped weeks of post-election preparations as the new government took shape.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the ceremony alongside senior Union leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and BJP national president Nitin Nabin. The event drew dignitaries and representatives from across India and abroad, underscoring the national attention on Assam’s political transition.
Governor Lakhmin Prasad Acharya administered the oath. At 57, Sarma becomes the first non-Congress leader in Assam’s history to serve two consecutive terms as chief minister, a milestone highlighted during the ceremony.
In the recent assembly elections, the BJP won 82 of the 126 seats. Its partners, the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), secured around 10 seats each, raising the NDA’s combined tally to 102 seats in the state legislature. Sarma, contesting from the Jalukbari constituency, won his seat by a margin of more than 89,000 votes.
Sarma also inducted a new ministerial team. BJP leaders Rameshwar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro and Ajanta Neog took oaths as ministers; Sarma had announced their names on social media ahead of the ceremony and noted they would be formally included in the council of ministers in the prime minister’s presence. Senior BJP leader and legislator Ranjit Das was chosen as the NDA’s candidate for the post of Speaker of the Assam Assembly.
This marks the NDA’s third consecutive term governing Assam, following its first term under then-chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal beginning in 2016. Security across Guwahati was tightened before the ceremony, with central and state security forces jointly deployed to ensure the event proceeded smoothly.
