Chennai, May 9, 2026 — Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi is due to arrive in Chennai on May 10, 2026, to attend the swearing-in of C. Joseph Vijay as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, official sources said. Gandhi is scheduled to land by flight at around 8:40 a.m. on May 10, while Vijay will take the oath at 10:00 a.m. at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is set to administer the oath of office to Vijay. Heavy security measures have been put in place across key locations in the city ahead of the high-profile ceremony. Several senior national and regional political leaders, film personalities and party workers are expected to attend.
The ceremony follows the May 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in which the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member assembly but fell short of an outright majority. The Indian National Congress promptly extended support to Vijay after the results, and the Communist parties, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also announced unconditional backing.
With the support of alliance partners and supporting parties, the TVK-led bloc has secured 120 Members of the Legislative Assembly, surpassing the majority threshold of 118 needed to form the government. Governor Arlekar formally invited Vijay to form the government after the alliance partners submitted letters of support to Raj Bhavan.
Vijay is expected to take the oath along with a small number of cabinet colleagues, with a full ministry expansion likely to follow at a later date. Political observers describe Vijay’s rise — from actor to politician — as one of the most significant developments in Tamil Nadu politics in recent years, marking the start of his first term as Chief Minister amid heightened public and political interest across the state.
