Himanta Sarma Stakes Claim to Form Assam Govt; Oath Set for May 12
Guwahati, May 10, 2026 — Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday met Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhavan to formally stake his claim to form the new BJP-led NDA government in the state after being elected leader of the alliance legislature party. Sarma was accompanied by Union Minister and former BJP president J.P. Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who served as the party’s central observers for the leadership election.
Earlier in the day, Nadda formally announced Sarma’s selection as leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA at a meeting at the party’s state headquarters in Guwahati. Sarma was unanimously chosen in the presence of central observers, and was later garlanded by Nadda, Saini, Asom Gana Parishad chief Atul Bora and Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan.
If sworn in, Sarma is set to begin a second consecutive term as chief minister, while the BJP-led NDA will form government in Assam for a third straight term. During the Raj Bhavan visit, Sarma was accompanied by Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, senior party leaders and state ministers, including Finance Minister Ajanta Neog. Atul Bora, whose AGP is a key NDA ally in Assam, also joined the meeting with the governor.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for May 12, 2026, at the Khanapara Veterinary College playground in Guwahati. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states are expected to attend, and the party has signalled the event will be a major demonstration of its strength in the Northeast. Senior NDA leaders and party workers from across Assam are also likely to participate.
