Dimapur, May 6 — Nagaland recorded one of the lowest numbers of “Offences against Woman and Child” in 2024, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said in its Crime in India 2024 report released on May 6, 2026. The State registered 36 cases in this category — the second-lowest among Indian states after Sikkim, which reported 30. Of Nagaland’s 36 cases, 12 were registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 24 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Among union territories, Lakshadweep reported the fewest cases at eight, followed by Ladakh with 25 and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu with 24. Nationwide, the NCRB recorded 2,84,530 cases of offences against women and children in 2024, representing 8.0% of total IPC and BNS crimes for the year.

Breaking down the offences in Nagaland, the largest share fell under the category of rape (Sections 64–71 of the BNS / Section 376 IPC). This was followed by nine cases of “assault or use of criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty” (Section 74 BNS / Section 354 IPC). There were four cases each of “cruelty by husband or relatives” (Section 85 BNS / Section 498-A IPC) and “sexual harassment” (Section 75 BNS / Section 354A IPC), three cases of assault with intent to disrobe (Section 76 BNS / Section 354B IPC), and one case each of attempted rape and of kidnapping or abducting a child with intent to steal from the person.

At the national level, “cruelty by husband or his relatives” accounted for the largest share of such offences, totaling 1,20,227 cases (42.3%). This was followed by “assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty” with 48,303 cases (17.0%) and “rape” with 29,536 cases (10.4%). The NCRB notes that the category “Offences against Women and Child” excludes cases registered under Special and Local Laws (SLL); those are reported separately under “Crimes against Women” and “Crimes against Children.” The bureau compiles this data from information supplied by states and union territories.

Overall crime in Nagaland declined in 2024 to 1,392 cases, down from 1,899 in 2023 (and 1,592 in 2022) — a drop of 507 cases or about 26.7 percent. Of the 1,392 crimes recorded, 802 were under IPC/BNS and 590 under SLL. Based on a mid-year projected population of 22.6 lakh in 2024, Nagaland’s IPC/BNS crime rate was 35.5 per lakh, the lowest among states and union territories; its overall cognisable crime rate stood at 61.6, the second lowest after Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (42.7). Nationally, total registered crimes fell to 58.85 lakh in 2024, a 6% decline from 62.41 lakh in 2023, with a national cognisable crime rate of 418.9.
