Road Reconstruction Begins After MLA Intervention: Relief at Last
According to a report published May 6, 2026 (last updated May 5, 2026), reconstruction work has begun on a half-kilometre stretch of the Geyzing–Sakyong road near Geyzing Bazaar after intervention by area MLA Loknath Sharma. The repair is intended to restore a vital link serving villages in the Sakyong block (Yangthang constituency) and parts of the Geyzing–Bermiok constituency, a route heavily used by students, farmers and traders transporting organic vegetables to Geyzing Bazaar.
Local officials said Sharma inspected the damaged section a few days before the work started and urged the State Roads and Bridges Department to act immediately. The department has since commenced reconstruction on a war footing despite continuous rainfall, officials added.
The Geyzing–Sakyong road runs over steep, sinking terrain and is highly prone to landslides, especially during the monsoon. The route has suffered frequent disruptions in recent years, with one section remaining closed for nearly a month last year, exacerbating hardship for commuters and isolating some communities.
Repeated disruptions force traders to manually transship produce by hiring porters, which raises transport costs and squeezes the margins of small-scale vendors. Residents and officials have long demanded a permanent fix, but only temporary measures such as realignment and periodic clearance have been implemented so far.
Roads and Bridges District Engineer Uttam Basnet said there is currently no provision for carpeting the stretch because the terrain remains unstable. “Road soling work to ensure smooth traffic flow remains the priority at present. Carpeting will be considered once the land stabilises,” he said.
Officials expressed hope that the ongoing reconstruction will bring immediate relief to villagers who depend heavily on the route for daily travel and livelihoods, while longer-term stabilization measures are evaluated.
