Historic BJP Breakthrough: Chief Ministers in India’s 4 Biggest States

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reached a new high in India’s state politics after winning a decisive majority in West Bengal and improving its showing in Assam, a result that leaves the party with chief ministers in the country’s four most populous states. In West Bengal the BJP won 206 of 294 assembly seats and is positioned to form the government; in Assam it increased its tally to 82 seats, 22 more than in 2021. Together with its existing governments, these outcomes expand the party’s national footprint ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi framed the gains in symbolic terms while addressing party workers, saying, “From Gangotri to Ganga Sagar, only the lotus blooms.” He made the remark on Monday (May 4, 2026) after results were declared, highlighting the party’s reach across diverse regions. The West Bengal victory is also billed as symbolically significant because BJP founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee hailed from the state.

Among India’s 10 most populous states, the BJP will now govern seven: Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and West Bengal, plus Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Its ally, the Telugu Desam Party, governs Andhra Pradesh. By contrast, Karnataka remains under the Congress, and Tamil Nadu is likely to see a government led by the party of actor C. Joseph Vijay. Overall, the BJP and its allies now control governments in 22 of India’s 28 states and in two of the three union territories that have legislatures — a scale of dominance commentators say has not been seen since the 1960s.

Party strategists credit a long-running, data-driven campaign model for the gains. Since 2014 the BJP’s election playbook, often associated with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has emphasized micro-management, booth-level planning and heavy use of voter data. That approach, the party says, has turned national messaging into local wins.

Grassroots organisation and worker deployment were central to the recent campaigns. Shakti Singh, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha’s West Bengal in-charge, told Firstpost that “dedicated karyakartas were central to the campaign.” He said workers from multiple states were posted in Bengal for months; Singh himself, a Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been stationed in West Bengal for the past six months.

The BJP has also leaned away from solely large rallies toward hyper-local structures such as the “panna pramukh” system, where cadres are assigned specific voter groups for sustained contact. Party officials say this booth-level engagement, paired with strong central messaging, materially contributed to their electoral success in these state polls.
