Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi accepted responsibility for the party’s heavy defeat in the recent Assam Assembly elections, saying he would shoulder accountability “as the captain” at a press conference held at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on May 5, 2026. He acknowledged the results fell well below expectations and said the party must answer for the outcome.
“As the captain, I am taking responsibility for this defeat,” Gogoi told reporters, saying the Congress had anticipated close contests in several constituencies but was surprised by the final margins in many seats. He added that voters appeared not to have accepted the result and described outcomes in a number of constituencies as “difficult to comprehend.”
Gogoi announced that newly elected Congress MLAs will meet on May 9, 2026, to review the party’s performance and decide on a future strategy for Assam. The meeting, he said, will assess what went wrong during the campaign and outline steps to rebuild at the state level.
He expressed gratitude to senior party leaders who supported the campaign, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Jitendra Singh, and praised grassroots workers for their loyalty during a difficult contest.
Accepting the people’s mandate, Gogoi congratulated the BJP and its leadership and urged them to address Assam’s problems without repeating the mistakes of the past five years. “We accept the people’s mandate. We congratulate the BJP and its leadership. We hope they will try to solve the problem that Assam is facing and not repeat the mistakes they made in the last five years,” he said.
Despite the setback, Gogoi said the Congress would remain a vigilant and robust opposition, committed to monitoring the BJP-led government and opposing policies deemed harmful to the public. “We will play our role as a proactive opposition to highlight people’s issues,” he said, and added that the party would restart public engagement to gather feedback before strengthening its organisational structure.
