India have announced their squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which will be held in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5. The tournament represents a fresh test for India in the shortest international format: the country has yet to win the women’s T20 World Cup, even after lifting the ODI World Cup on home soil last year under Harmanpreet Kaur’s captaincy.
Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the side, with Smriti Mandhana named vice-captain. The selectors have backed an aggressive top order by handing the opening duties to Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, both of whom impressed with explosive form in the recent ODI success-Shafali in particular was noted for her power hitting. Richa Ghosh will take the gloves and is expected to handle finishing responsibilities as well.
The squad includes a mix of experience and youth: Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Arundhati Reddy, Renuka Thakur and Radha Yadav bring proven international pedigree, while Bharti Fulmali, Yastika Bhatia and Shreyanka Patil add depth in batting and wicketkeeping options. Pace bowler Nandini Sharma has been included in the World Cup squad for the first time after strong performances in the Women’s Premier League, earning her maiden T20 World Cup call-up. Kranti Gaur and Sricharani (as listed) round out the pace and spin options.
Several players have been left out of the T20 World Cup squad: Anushka Sharma, Uma Chetri, Kashvi Gautam, Pratika Rawal and Harleen Deol did not make the cut. The omission of these names reflects the selectors’ current balance between experience and recent form. India’s recent T20 results have been mixed-Harmanpreet’s side suffered a 1-4 series defeat to South Africa in a prior T20 campaign-so expectations and pressure will be high ahead of the tournament.
As part of final preparations, India will play a three-match warm-up series in England before the World Cup begins. India’s opening World Cup match is scheduled for June 14 in Birmingham against Pakistan; India are placed in Group 1 alongside Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, the Netherlands and Bangladesh.
