Nagaland Mock Drill: Earthquake & Extreme Weather Alert
A state-level mock drill on earthquake and extreme-weather disaster management was carried out across districts in Nagaland on Thursday, organised by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority and district disaster agencies in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The exercise aimed to test departmental and public readiness and to improve coordinated response during major earthquakes and extreme weather events.
Nagaland Home Commissioner Abhijit Sinha, speaking at a post-drill press conference, said the exercise was designed to assess the efficiency of government departments and communities in handling disasters, raise awareness, and give officials a clearer picture of how a real incident might unfold. He said the drill would help authorities refine plans and response procedures.
Maj. Gen. Sudhir Bahl, NDMA’s lead consultant for mock exercises and incident response systems, warned that “disasters can never be managed with 100 per cent efficiency, but response systems can always be improved.” He urged the telecom department and service providers to coordinate closely, stressing that reliable communication is one of the most critical needs during a disaster.
Bahl highlighted several operational priorities revealed by the exercise. He called for adequate fire-safety equipment at petrol pumps, and said school safety should receive intensive drills: “School safety was another important area where maximum exercises should be taken up.” He also urged medical teams to be prepared with extra equipment and to maintain coordination with neighbouring states during large-scale emergencies.
Civil agencies such as the PWD, NHIDCL and BRO were reminded to be ready to restore surface communication routes quickly in case landslides or other damage block roads and bridges. Bahl emphasised the value of uniformed volunteers, including NCC units and similar agencies, as a trained resource during response efforts. He concluded that broad participation and tight coordination across departments and service providers are vital to improving disaster resilience in the state.
