Manipur MLA Opens Landmark Private Clinic in Conflict-Hit Saikul
On April 29, MLA Kimneo Hangshing inaugurated L&S Compassionate Healthcare at Saikul Hill Town in Kangpokpi district, marking the area’s first private healthcare clinic after years of conflict and disruption to medical services. The new centre aims to restore critical health infrastructure in one of Manipur’s most conflict-affected areas by offering outpatient and in-patient care, emergency and trauma response, diagnostic services including radiology and CT scan, laboratory facilities, and a 24/7 pharmacy.
The inauguration, attended by church leaders, civil society organisations, government officials and local residents, was framed as a step toward recovery for communities that have endured violence, displacement and limited access to timely treatment. A presentation by John Lupheng outlined the centre’s vision and operational plans, and Dr. Lupheng said the facility will operate on the principle of “Healing Hands and Caring Hearts,” committing to quality and compassionate care for underserved populations.
Speaking after the opening, MLA Kimneo Hangshing described the clinic’s arrival in Saikul as both a developmental milestone and a humanitarian necessity. She said repeated episodes of violence had exposed severe gaps in emergency response, trauma care and diagnostic access, and stressed that quality healthcare must not remain out of reach for hill communities where timely treatment can mean the difference between life and death. Hangshing also praised the founders and stakeholders for bringing advanced services to the grassroots and for narrowing the long-standing healthcare divide between hill and urban areas.
The programme included a dedication led by Hegin Misao, who offered prayers for healing and protection for the institution and its staff. Community leaders, civil society groups and residents called the launch a historic and hopeful moment for families affected by conflict and displacement, expressing optimism that the centre will become a vital pillar of healing and recovery.
The opening of L&S Compassionate Healthcare is being seen not only as an expansion of medical services in Saikul but as a symbolic step toward rebuilding: reinforcing the argument that strengthening health systems should go hand in hand with peacebuilding and broader development in conflict-affected regions.
