Trump Holds Urgent Security Talks on Iran’s Proposal to Reopen Hormuz

US President Donald Trump met with his national security team on Monday to consider an Iranian proposal reportedly aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the White House said, as broader negotiations over the war and Tehran’s nuclear program continue. The plan, as reported, would involve both Iran and the United States lifting their blockades ahead of further talks.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters that “the proposal was being discussed” and confirmed the president had met with his national security team that morning, but she declined to say whether Trump would accept the offer.

According to media reports, the proposal would postpone detailed nuclear negotiations to a later stage in exchange for reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz — the waterway through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas normally transits.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized the reported terms, saying Iran’s definition of “opening” the strait did not meet U.S. demands. In a Fox News interview he argued, “If what they mean by opening the straits is, ‘yes, the straits are open as long as you coordinate with Iran, get our permission or we’ll blow you up and you pay us,’ that’s not opening the straits.”

Rubio added that the United States could not tolerate any arrangement that effectively allowed Iran to decide who may use an international waterway or to extract payment for passage.

U.S. outlet Axios had earlier reported the president would convene his national security team to review Iran’s offer and the possibility of deferring nuclear talks. ABC News, citing two anonymous U.S. officials, reported the deal fell short of Washington’s red lines.

Leavitt reiterated to reporters that “the president’s red lines with respect to Iran have been made very, very clear, not just to the American public, but also to them as well.”
