Transforming the Future: Ex-DeepMind’s David Silver Raises $1.1 Billion for Groundbreaking AI Startup Ineffable

A former leading researcher from Google’s AI division, DeepMind, has made waves by securing an unprecedented $1.1 billion in seed funding for his fledgling startup, Ineffable Intelligence. Founded in late 2025 by David Silver, a professor at University College London and a former head of DeepMind’s reinforcement learning team, the venture aims to explore the frontiers of superintelligence. This investment marks the largest seed round ever recorded in Europe, positioning Ineffable Intelligence with a valuation of $5.1 billion.

The funding round was co-led by prominent U.S. venture capital firms Sequoia and Lightspeed, with notable participation from tech giants such as Nvidia, DST Global, Index, Google, and the U.K.’s Sovereign AI Fund, among others. Silver’s startup will specialize in reinforcement learning, a methodology in which AI models learn from their own experiences rather than relying primarily on human-generated data, distinguishing it from current leading AI systems that heavily utilize internet text for training.

In his official statement, Silver articulated ambitious goals for his company, stating, “We aim to transcend the greatest inventions in human history, such as language, science, mathematics, and technology.” He emphasized the mission of creating a “superlearner” capable of acquiring knowledge from its experiences, ranging from basic motor skills to groundbreaking intellectual achievements.

This significant funding comes amid a trend of top talent from major tech companies leaving to establish their own AI labs. Recent reports highlight the momentum in this sector, with multiple firms attracting substantial investments. For instance, Recursive Superintelligence, launched by former Google DeepMind engineer Tim Rocktäschel, was reported to be raising nearly $1 billion. Similarly, AMI Labs announced a $1 billion raise just months after its founder, Yann LeCun, departed from his role as AI chief at Meta.

Former researchers from other leading AI companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, have also successfully raised significant funds for their new ventures, such as Periodic Labs and Humans&. This wave of investment underscores a shift in the AI landscape, where finance increasingly flows toward independent startups aiming for innovation.

The U.K.’s Science and Technology Secretary, Liz Kendall, remarked on the importance of this investment in a statement, asserting, “This investment in Ineffable will support a company at the very frontier of AI, with the potential to transform entire sectors. It underlines our determination to ensure that the U.K. isn’t just an AI taker but an AI maker.”

As Ineffable Intelligence sets its sights on pioneering advancements in AI, the landscape of artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving. With significant investments fueling innovation, industry watchers will be closely following the implications of this funding on the future of AI technologies and their applications across various sectors.

The burgeoning exodus of talent from major tech firms, combined with the robust financial backing for new startups, paints a vibrant picture of an industry poised for transformative developments. As the race for superintelligence heats up, the implications for society and technology will certainly be profound.
