A severe thunderstorm struck parts of Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district on the night of April 26, leaving at least 12 houses damaged across 10 villages, officials said on April 27. The storm, accompanied by strong winds and lightning, hit areas under Rerapara, Zikzak and Purakhasia blocks late on Sunday.
Rerapara was among the worst affected: four houses were partially damaged and one house was completely destroyed. In Zikzak, five houses sustained partial damage, while two houses were partially damaged in Purakhasia, bringing the reported total to 12 homes across the district.
Despite the property damage, authorities said there were no casualties or injuries. Infrastructure was also affected: a solar panel at Mellim Primary Health Centre was dislodged, several power lines were brought down, and debris temporarily blocked the approach road to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
District officials reported that power supply was restored shortly after the storm subsided and that teams have been deployed to clear roads and remove debris. The district administration is closely monitoring the situation and has initiated measures to assist affected families and repair damaged infrastructure.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rainfall across most parts of Meghalaya over the next four days, and disaster management authorities have issued warnings urging residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions. Officials advised people in vulnerable areas to avoid unnecessary travel and to follow local safety guidance until conditions improve.
