Koch Community Celebrates Pabuni with Sacred Rituals in Garo Hills
The Koch tribal community in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills observed the traditional Pabuni festival on Sunday, April 26, at Gandipara village, gathering to offer prayers for a bountiful harvest, environmental well‑being and general prosperity for the season ahead. Organised by the Meghalaya Koch Association and the Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union, the event drew community members from across the area to take part in the rituals and ceremonies.
From early morning, boys and girls in traditional Koch attire assembled beneath a sacred peepal tree, the designated site for the rites. Participants performed customary prayers and sought blessings as part of a long‑standing tradition meant to secure agricultural success and the welfare of all community sections. The observance also emphasised prayers for peace and happiness across society.
Organisers noted the cultural importance of Pabuni but said the festival has so far received no government support. They expressed optimism that the Meghalaya government will extend assistance in the future to help preserve and promote Koch cultural practices and traditions.
Community leaders described the festival as more than a religious observance: it serves to reinforce Koch identity, strengthen intergenerational bonds, and promote values of harmony and collective well‑being. Attendees said maintaining such ceremonies is vital for cultural continuity amid changing social and environmental conditions.
