Assam Bolsters Guwahati Flood Readiness; 300 Landslide-Risk Zones

The Assam government has launched precautionary measures in Guwahati after forecasts indicated heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, with Chief Secretary Ravi Kota convening senior officials on Saturday to assess the city’s preparedness and order that equipment and emergency teams be kept ready at all times. Authorities said more than 300 locations considered vulnerable to landslides are under close observation and that public awareness activities are being carried out in these high-risk areas.

Teams are clearing major drains, inspecting pumping systems and reinforcing safety measures along the Bharalu river and other drainage lines to improve water flow. Open drains and manholes are being secured and warning barriers installed where needed to reduce risks to pedestrians and vehicles. The Guwahati Municipal Corporation and the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority have been directed to keep pumping machines running round the clock.

Traffic management plans have also been prepared to respond to potential road blockages from waterlogging. The Guwahati City Traffic Police warned that traffic congestion may rise if roads flood and said alternate routes are being kept ready to ease movement. Officials inspected drainage in areas including Silsaku, Juripar, Bharalu, Bahini, Basistha, Pamohi and along the Jorabat–Byrnihat route, and reviewed roads such as Jalukbari–Gorchuk and zones near major hospitals to ensure outlets for runoff are clear.

Representatives from the India Meteorological Department, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority and district teams exchanged weather updates and discussed response plans, emphasising coordination and regular monitoring. Residents have been advised to avoid flooded locations, stay away from open drains and landslide-prone slopes, and to plan travel cautiously. Officials stressed that public cooperation will be crucial during the rainy period.
