Since the joint strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28, 2026, instability across West Asia has raised serious concerns about the safety of hundreds of thousands of Indian nationals working in Gulf countries. An RTI (Right to Information) application filed by Nitin Rajiv Sinha, head of the RTI wing of the Chhattisgarh Congress, sought details of any steps the Indian government had taken or special plans prepared to protect expatriate Indians in the region.

After a lengthy process, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a surprising reply. The ministry’s Gulf division Central Public Information Officer (CPIO), Anurag Nagre, wrote that the information sought was not available in the office’s records. At the same time, the CPIO said the ministry was continuing necessary efforts through its missions and embassies abroad to ensure the welfare of Indians living in the region.

The response has prompted questions about whether the government did not take formal, recordable measures or whether such actions exist but have not been disclosed. The lack of documented information has fuelled public unease, particularly among migrant workers and families dependent on official help during crises.

Workers on the ground say they felt abandoned. A migrant identified as Gurjindar, employed in Kuwait, claimed the Indian embassy did not contact them during the period of heightened tension. Several other Indians in the Gulf have reported arranging their own security measures without embassy support.

Official statistics cited in the RTI note that roughly 9.9 million (99 lakh) Indians live across the six Gulf countries, a population that includes a large number of low-income laborers. The absence of visible, documented government outreach during a major regional crisis has heightened anxiety among this sizeable community. Journalists emailed the MEA seeking further clarity; the ministry had not responded by the time this report was filed.
