Delhi NCR Faces Devastating Heavy Rain: IMD Issues Urgent Orange Alert!

Heavy rainfall swept across parts of Delhi NCR on Friday evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for the national capital and a yellow alert for areas including Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Hisar. Initially, the IMD’s forecasts included only a yellow alert, but this was later updated to reflect the worsening weather conditions. The IMD anticipates that moderate to heavy rainfall, along with light thunderstorms and lightning, will persist throughout the region.

According to the latest bulletin from the IMD, the Delhi area is expected to face a brief period of atmospheric instability, followed by a week characterized by elevated temperatures. On April 18, a partly cloudy sky is forecasted for Delhi. The IMD’s orange alert for the capital warns residents of the potential for moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Additional regions in the NCR, including Gautam Buddha Nagar, Hapur, Ghaziabad, and Baghpat, are also under the orange alert. In Uttar Pradesh, yellow alerts were issued for Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, and Bijnor, among others. In Haryana, yellow alerts were given for Palwal, Gurgaon, Rewari, and Faridabad, while an orange alert is in effect for Charki Dadri, Bhiwani, and Sonipat.

Following the unexpected downpour on Friday, temperatures in several areas of Delhi NCR dropped by 7 to 10 degrees Celsius. Jafarpur experienced an 8.6-degree decline, while Narayana saw the most significant drop at 10.1 degrees. The rainfall provided a welcome relief from the heat, particularly in areas such as Pragati Maidan, Pitampura, Jharoda Kalan, and Najafgarh, which recorded high daytime temperatures around 41 degrees Celsius, but fell significantly in the evening.

As the week progresses, the IMD’s long-range forecast suggests that this respite from rain will soon give way to hotter, drier conditions. From April 18 through April 19, partially cloudy skies are expected, transitioning to mainly clear skies from April 20 to April 23. During this period, maximum temperatures are projected to remain high, fluctuating between 39°C and 42°C, while minimum temperatures are likely to settle between 20°C and 24°C.

With extreme weather patterns becoming increasingly common, residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and heed the warnings issued by the IMD. The combination of rain and fluctuating temperatures significantly impacts daily life, from traffic conditions to outdoor activities. As the region prepares for potential heatwaves following this rain, understanding the weather dynamics will be essential for public safety and comfort.
