Shocking: Over 53kg Suspected Beef Seized at Hailakandi Hotels; 4 Held
Silchar: Police on Monday seized 53.89 kg of suspected beef from two hotels in Hailakandi district and arrested four people, officials said. A team from Lala police station carried out the searches on Sunday evening in the Monacherra area after receiving specific inputs, the statement added.
During a raid at one hotel, officers recovered 21.99 kg of suspected beef from a refrigerator in the kitchen. A subsequent search at a second hotel produced another 31.9 kg, bringing the total to 53.89 kg.
Four men were arrested in connection with the seizures. They have been identified as Nazrul Islam Borbhuiya, 40, of Rajyeshwarpur; Abu Salam Majarbhuiya, 30; Ibadur Rahman Choudhury, 25; and Imdadur Rahman Choudhury, 26, both from Borbond in the district.
Police said the accused failed to produce any valid documents to prove the source or legality of the meat. The suspects were detained at the scene and later formally arrested, officials said.
The seized meat was sealed in the presence of independent witnesses, and separate seizure lists were prepared for each establishment. Samples have been sent to the district veterinary officer for scientific testing to determine the nature of the meat. The remaining stock has been stored in cold storage at a government veterinary facility.
Authorities also seized four mobile phones from the arrested men for further investigation. Police said the case may involve not only illegal sale but also unlawful slaughter in the area, and investigators are working to trace a possible larger network.
