The recent escalation of the conflict in West Asia has led to increased prices for both domestic and commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders in India, driven primarily by supply shortages stemming from disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy shipments. With India relying on imports for about 60% of its LPG and 50% of its natural gas, these disturbances have created immediate pressure on the supply chain.
In response to the ongoing situation, the government has assured the public that the LPG supply in India remains stable and sufficient. Authorities have consistently urged customers not to panic, advising against excessive bookings and hoarding of gas cylinders. Despite these reassurances, domestic LPG prices have seen their first revision in March with an increase of ₹60 for a 14.2 kg cylinder. Since then, rates for domestic LPG have remained unchanged, providing some level of stability for consumers.
Conversely, commercial LPG prices have experienced more significant fluctuations, with revisions made twice over the past two months. This has impacted sectors reliant on LPG, such as restaurants and eateries, more sharply. In March, the price for a 19 kg commercial cylinder was raised by ₹144, followed by another hike of nearly ₹200 on April 1.
As of April 12, here are the city-wise LPG rates:
– New Delhi: Domestic – ₹913.00, Commercial – ₹2,078.50
– Kolkata: Domestic – ₹939.00, Commercial – ₹2,208.50
– Mumbai: Domestic – ₹912.50, Commercial – ₹2,031.00
– Chennai: Domestic – ₹928.50, Commercial – ₹2,246.50
– Bengaluru: Domestic – ₹915.50, Commercial – ₹2,161.00
These rate adjustments are part of the monthly updates employed by state-owned oil marketing firms, such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum. These companies routinely revise LPG and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices in response to global energy market fluctuations.
Since the conflict in West Asia began, international oil prices have surged by nearly 50%, severely affecting energy supply chains in import-dependent nations like India. This spike in costs inevitably translates into domestic pricing, straining consumers and businesses alike.
In a related development, Vikram, an Indian-flagged LPG vessel, has successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz, marking a significant milestone amid the ongoing tensions. This transmission occurred shortly after a temporary ceasefire announcement between the U.S. and Iran, with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council indicating acceptance of a two-week ceasefire to negotiate further with the United States.
The tanker, which is under the management of Mumbai-based Great Eastern Shipping Company, is carrying 20,400 tonnes of LPG and is scheduled to arrive in Mumbai on April 15, 2026. This successful passage boosts hopes for more stable energy logistics in the region, although the broader impacts of the West Asia conflict on global supply chains continue to loom large.
