Meghalaya CM Gives Rs 25L to Women’s Shelter, Uplifts Care-Home Youth
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on April 11 inaugurated the Nabon Memorial Home, a new shelter for destitute and abandoned women in Mawïong Rim, and announced a grant of Rs 25 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF) to support its operations. The facility aims to provide secure accommodation and care for vulnerable women in the region.
The home was established by the Jingiaseng Kynthei Shillong Ri‑Lum Presbytery under the Shillong Ri‑Lum Presbytery and will be managed to offer basic necessities and a supportive environment for residents. Officials said the facility is intended to ensure that women who have been abandoned or left destitute can live with dignity and safety.
The shelter is named after Ka Nabon, who is recognised locally as the first Christian woman to embrace the faith in the Khasi Hills. Sangma called the naming “a tribute that reflects courage, faith, and service,” underscoring the symbolic importance of linking the home to a historical figure of local significance.
Speaking at the inauguration, Sangma described the facility as “a sanctuary of hope and compassion, welcoming and caring for destitute and abandoned women of the community, and ensuring they have a safe place to live with dignity, security, and care.” He said the state government would support the home’s functioning alongside the Presbytery’s efforts.
Earlier the same day, Sangma met 41 meritorious students from Child Care Institutions under the Social Welfare Department and presented cash awards recognising their academic achievements. He also pledged personal support for their secondary education through the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, a move highlighted given the challenging circumstances many of the children face. “These children are an inspiration to us and teach us that circumstances do not define where we go, but should inspire us to chase our dreams regardless,” Sangma said.
