Jaishankar Expresses Gratitude to UAE for Protecting Indians’ Safety Amidst Middle East Turmoil Following US-Iran Talks Collapse

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar engaged in crucial discussions with UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Saturday, addressing the rapidly changing landscape in the Middle East. In a post on X, Jaishankar expressed gratitude for the UAE’s efforts to safeguard the Indian community in the Gulf nation. “Conveyed our deep appreciation for ensuring the well-being of the Indian community in the UAE,” he noted, underscoring the importance of the dialogue that also reflected on the implications of the evolving regional context.

Earlier, Jaishankar interacted with members of the Indian community in the UAE, reaffirming the Government of India’s commitment to their welfare and security amid the increasing volatility in the region, characterized by drone and missile assaults attributed to Iran and its affiliates. His meeting with Sheikh Abdullah took place just hours before the announcement that US-Iran truce negotiations had collapsed.

US President J.D. Vance, following a 21-hour meeting in Islamabad, acknowledged the failure to reach a deal with Tehran. He commented, “Despite substantive discussions, the US was clear about its red lines… and they have chosen not to accept our terms.” Vance emphasized that the core objective of the negotiations remains a firm commitment from Iran against pursuing nuclear weapons and the tools to develop them. “This is bad news for Iran much more than for the US,” he added, suggesting the implications of the failed talks would be more severe for Tehran.

In response, Iranian officials deemed US demands “too excessive.” The Tasnim news agency reported that the situation in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz would remain unchanged following the breakdown of negotiations. Since the onset of the US-Israeli war on Iran on February 28, the Strait of Hormuz has become a focal point of tension, disrupting global energy markets and causing a surge in oil prices. Former President Trump had previously urged for its reopening, warning of severe consequences for Iran should negotiations falter.

The escalating conflict highlights the precarious balance of power in the region, where the implications extend beyond local borders, affecting global energy stability. As tensions rise, the stakes for diplomatic engagement remain high, with the international community closely monitoring the developments.

As the Middle East continues to face uncertainties, the conversations between Indian officials and their UAE counterparts reflect a broader commitment to regional stability and the protection of expatriate communities. Jaishankar’s emphasizes on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signals India’s proactive stance in navigating the complex geopolitical dynamics shaping the region.

This evolving narrative underscores the urgent need for sustained dialogue and cooperative efforts among nations to mitigate risks and foster peace in an increasingly volatile landscape.

As the global community remains attentive to the developments in the Middle East, the dialogue between India and the UAE serves as a vital component of diplomatic initiatives aimed at ensuring the security and well-being of diverse populations amid a challenging environment.
