
French Ambassador’s Inspiring Visit to North Sikkim’s Iconic Sites
French Ambassador Thierry Mathou visited cultural and historic sites in the Kabi subdivision of Mangan district in North Sikkim on April 12, 2026, undertaking a day of engagements aimed at strengthening cultural ties between India and France. He was accompanied by his spouse, Cécile Mathou, members of the French Consulate team from Kolkata, including Political and Cooperation Officer Yazid Soussi, and other delegates. The visit was reported by the Information and Public Relations (IPR) department.
On arrival at Labrang Monastery in Phodong, the ambassador was officially received by Sub Divisional Magistrate of Kabi, Monika Rai. The delegation toured several key heritage sites, beginning with the monastery complex at Phodong and continuing to the historical ruins of the royal palace at Tumlong. They also visited Phensang Monastery and the Kabi Lungchok site, known for the historic Blood Brotherhood Treaty.
Throughout the visit the delegates held interactions focused on areas of mutual cooperation and explored opportunities for cultural exchange and partnership. The programme emphasized Sikkim’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage as a foundation for people‑to‑people links and diplomatic engagement. Authorities described the visit as a step forward in promoting collaboration between India and France, particularly in cultural diplomacy and heritage cooperation.
